Review by Mo Ritz
On the shore of Onondaga Lake at the Lakeview Amphitheater a much welcomed
return of mad man, drummers and outlaw musicians. With a boulder on my
shoulder called the sun sweltering, sweaty, sticky I was happy to hear the
singing, strumming, drums, piano, bass, fiddle and harmonica(s). The Red
Clay Stray Cats hot diggity they got what it takes. Turnpike Troubadours
revved up the crowd. (Not really a band that's ever been in my
wheelhouse). As the sun began to crash to the ground I was hoping to take
down my shades that were slipping and sliding down my face; When Bob Dylan
and his band walked onto the stage and I was Blinded by the Light! Bob
stood/sat for the show at a piano that looked like a prison cell. The
piano had light poles attached to it with bright lights aimed at the
audience. The band sounded good. A bit subdued after the romping country
of the first two bands. This was a nice slow, country-blues-ish sound. My
favorite tonight, was one of my not so favorite songs, Under The Red Sky.
There were covers, and oldies and more recent songs from Bob's prolific
catalog and somewhere in there I thought I heard one of the guitars play a
riff of Thunder Mountain. Such a tease. There was no hello, no band
introductions, and no thank you. After Don't Think Twice Bob and the
band lined up at the back of the stage which wasn't really that far from
where they played, stood and turned and walked off the stage. Hello Bob
and the band and thank you. Next up was a much anticipated Willie Nelson!
We missed you last year and loved you in Saratoga last year at Farm Aid!
At last my shades came off! There wasn't anything I didn't enjoy, but
my favorites tonight were: You Were Always On My Mind and Me and Bobby
McGee. The Outlaw Music Festival never disappoints if you can, check it
out on the next leg of the tour... you're in for some great music.
