Review by Tom Kirby

Bob and his band had a very good show at Chula Vista. His set started
about 8 PM and lasted about 70 minutes, and he was in fine form and
very good voice. He and Willie Nelson got very favorable reviews of
this show from SD music critic George
Varga,(https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/07/30/review-willie-nelso

Two comments from the review:

"(Bob) sang with exceptional warmth and clarity throughout, so much so
that he sounded almost transformed."

"He breathed new life into each song by changing their moods, tempos
and styles at will."

Bob was clearly in a good mood and happy to be there. He was very
invested in each song. The band is sounding a lot better to me than
the boots I heard of the first leg of this festival tour. They sound a
lot more comfortable playing this set list now, a lot more rehearsed
and familiar with the material and what Bob is looking for. The
audience was not as attentive as a typical Dylan show, but much more
attentive than a typical festival crowd. I think a lot of them were
surprised how good Dylan and his band were sounding, and they took
notice.

I've seen Bob 32 times since 1978, and I rate this show in the top 10
that I have seen. I particularly appreciate how he is singing with
such care and clarity, and it's a fun setlist. If you are unsure
whether you want to deal with a big festival to see Bob, I strongly
advise that you do so. It also helps that Willie and his band by far
exceeded my expectations. They deserved to be the headliners. I am
blown away by Willie's guitar playing and singing. Check him out on

Or check out his ability to sing an incredible ballad here:

His son Micah Nelson (who has recently filled in admirably for
unavailable Nils Lofgren on the Neil Young Crazy Horse tour - he's
that good) was featured heavily in the set and played two hilarious
yet poignant songs that he wrote, If I Die When I'm High, I'll be
Halfway to Heaven (a comment he heard from Willie that he made into a
song to be sung by Willie), and Everything is Bullshit, links here:

John Mellencamp also put on a good show. It was a nostalgic setlist,
but performed well by a 7 piece band with a nice full, professional
sound. I missed the opening act, but John seemed to put the show off
to a very good start. Bottom line, this leg of the tour is very worth
seeing. Go and enjoy!

Best regards to all you Bobcats,

Tom Kirby
