[D.E. Weil]

Review by D.E. Weil

My 4 year-old concert buddy braved the traffic, the lines, the heat and
got a spot on the grass (so he could eventually curl up into a ball after
Bob's set and rest til the long drive home).

Sierra Hull was great.
Billy Strings was great. King of California is a great song, not just an
opportunity to pick and noodle.

Now for Bob- His voice was in pretty great form, especially considering he
often needs a warm-up song. Things Have Changed was a lot of fun,
especially the way it breaks down, as if it ending, after each chorus. My
son and I loved that.

Simple Twist of Fate - very nice. I've heard this a lot live and am always
glad he changes the parrot that talks line, as it's my least fav of the
song.

Forgetful Heart - man, have I missed this song. Was it a version to rival
the Sinatra years of standing up front? Not remotely close, but it was a
welcome old friend, a bit shaggier than last time, but still a friend of a
song.

Axe and the Wind - like some, I'd never heard of this song. I don't really
have much of an opinion of it, honestly. It didn't really leave much of an
impression at first listen. Perhaps I'll get some boots and return to it.

To Ramona - the song I was most excited to catch, as I was at the Cap show
the night before he played this way back when, so I had never heard it
live. And...it wasn't great. His vocals did that staccato thing, chopping
up syllables in a way that made it less fun to listen to and harder to
follow, even for a song I know quite well. I was excited to finally hear
it but it was definitely a low point in some ways. Perhaps it sounded
better up close but from the grass, it was a challenge to listen to.

ERK - a song I wouldn't mind losing from the setlist, to be honest. I've
heard it something like 17 times now, and there are just so many other
songs I'd rather here. It was a good performance, though, better
enunciated than other times I've heard him.

Under the Red Sky - I know it's not the greatest song in the world, but I
never really mind it when it's an outdoor show. Sure, I'd rather here Not
Dark Yet or Shooting Star (which my son was hoping would return like last
summer) but there's a sweetness to it that I can't deny.

I'll Make It Up To You - another unknown cover to me. I liked it more than
the first but it too hasn't stuck in my head. But I always appreciate
these leftfield covers. Like Themetime, it's an education from Bob I
enjoy.

Watchtower - yes, it does sound like Dire Straits. Yes, it's fun and
different. It got the biggest (only?) reaction from the crowd when it
began. Some guitar solos to wake up the crowd. I never tire of the song
but I do miss the old days when it really rocked. Still, a good
performance.

Til I Fell In Love With You - I was floored by this addition and even more
so when I really I'd never heard it live. Now I just need to hear DIrt
Road Blues, Million Miles, Standing in the Doorway (my fav) and Highlands
to complete TOOM (never gonna happen but a guy can dream). This was a lot
of fun, loose and bluesy in all the right ways. A real treat.

Desolation Row - I got tired of hearing this live years ago, back when
Spirit on the Water was played a lot, but this was a welcome return. It
didn't feel too long (did he cut a verse or 2 out? I think so...he did the
same with Things Have Changed, which was a shame as it's my favorite
verse). And the harmonica was nice.

Love Sick - always love hearing this one.

Share Your Love With Me - my fav cover of the night. Not sure why but it
clicked in a way the others didn't.

Blind Willie McTell - one of my all time favorite songs, top 5 for sure. I
told my son one day he'll be excited that he got to hear this one. It
wasn't my fav performance of it, I think it needs to be in a theater to
get the spooky punch it requires, but any version of this song is alright
with me.

Don't Think Twice - ending with a great classic, great vocals, good harp.

The show was 15 songs but not 75 min as advertised...they left the lights
out long enough to think maybe we'd get an encore but alas no. despite
missing 10 minutes of music, it was thoroughly enjoyable despite being far
away and surrounded by ppl who didn't give a damn who was playing.
