Review by Kevin Ellis
Drove from Philadelphia out to beautiful Ohio for Bob Dylan show #80, my first of this current leg.
The lights in the theater did not go out until about three songs in, so Bob was very visible on a
smaller stage for "To Be Alone with You" and "Man in the Long Black Coat". While these two
were lovely, his voice really kicked in with "I Contain Multitudes", which my friend and I both
remarked was the best arrangement we've heard.
The band seems a bit timid to draw attention to itself on certain songs; perhaps this hesitance
was a bit more prominent on songs where Dylan's vocal doesn't assert the melody as forcefully
because they shined on others. My partner and I both agreed that the sparse,
single-strum-repeating "Crossing the Rubicon" was the highlight of the evening. The wistful
yearn in Dylan's voice drew out notes in "Black Rider" and others that felt so emotional and
showcased the full efforts of this 84 year old troubadour. Bob played harmonica for about a half
a second on the spanish-salsa-y "Masterpiece" but broke out the usual big guns for the "Every
Grain of Sand" finale.
With the quieter band, fun arrangements, and intimate setting very conducive to Dylan's voice,
this was my favorite Dylan concert since the Fillmore in Philadelphia a couple years ago. I will
follow this man, the feelings he's given me, even taught me, and helped me refine for as long
as I can. All signs point to an artist just getting started.
